چکیده

Coloring graphs is an important algorithmic problem in combinatorics with many applications in computer science. In this paper we study coloring tournaments. A chromatic number of a random tournament is of order Ω( n log(n)). The question arises whether the chromatic number can be proven to be smaller for more structured nontrivial classes of tournaments. We analyze the class of tournaments defined by a forbidden subtournament H. This paper gives a first quasi-polynomial algorithm running in time eO(log(n) 2) that constructs colorings of H-free tournaments using only O(n1−ǫ(H) log(n)) colors, where ǫ(H) ≥ 2−2 50|H|2+1 for many forbidden tournaments H. To the best of our knowledge all previously known related results required at least sub-exponential time and relied on the regularity lemma. Since we do not use the regularity lemma, we obtain the first known lower bounds on ǫ(H) that can be given by a closed-form expression. As a corollary, we give a constructive proof of the celebrated open Erdős-Hajnal conjecture with explicitly given lower bounds on the EH coefficients for all classes of prime tournaments for which the conjecture is known. Such a constractive proof was not known before. Thus we significantly reduce the gap between best lower and upper bounds on the EH coefficients from the conjecture for all known prime tournaments that satisfy it. We also briefly explain how our methods may be used for coloring H-free tournaments under the following conditions: H is any tournament with ≤ 5 vertices or: H is any but one tournament of six vertices.

Forbidden Lifts (np and Csp for Combinatorists)

We present a definition of the class NP in combinatorial context as the class of languages of structures defined by finitely many forbidden lifted substructures. We apply this to special syntactically defined subclasses and show how they correspond to naturally defined (and intensively studied) combinatorial problems. We show that some types of combinatorial problems like edge colorings and gra...

Equitable defective coloring of sparse planar graphs

A graph has an equitable, defective k-coloring (an ED-k-coloring) if there is a kcoloring of V (G) that is defective (every vertex shares the same color with at most one neighbor) and equitable (the sizes of all color classes differ by at most one). A graph may have an ED-kcoloring, but no ED-(k + 1)-coloring. In this paper, we prove that planar graphs with minimum degree at least 2 and girth a...

NP by Means of Lifts and Shadows

We show that every NP problem is polynomially equivalent to a simple combinatorial problem: the membership problem for a special class of digraphs. These classes are defined by means of shadows (projections) and by finitely many forbidden colored (lifted) subgraphs. Our characterization is motivated by the analysis of syntactical subclasses with the full computational power of NP, which were fi...

Fixed-Parameter Tractability Results for Feedback Set Problems in Tournaments

Complementing recent progress on classical complexity and polynomial-time approximability of feedback set problems in (bipartite) tournaments, we extend and partially improve fixed-parameter tractability results for these problems. We show that Feedback Vertex Set in tournaments is amenable to the novel iterative compression technique. Moreover, we provide data reductions and problem kernels fo...

The one-dimensional Euclidean preferences: Finitely many forbidden substructures are not enough

We show that one-dimensional Euclidean preference profiles cannot be characterizedin terms of finitely many forbidden substructures. This result is in strong contrastto the case of single-peaked and single-crossing preference profiles, for which suchfinite characterizations have been derived in the literature.
